Garrity's Sunday Stakes picks Affirmed Success at Aqueduct, Santa Barbara and Wilshire at Santa Anita

Garrity's first post is 5:10 pm EDT.

We have three plays for the last day of April: a race for state-breds in New York that looks quite wet, and a couple of turf races stakes out West, where the weather should be perfect. Let’s go.

Aqueduct, Race 8, 5:10 pm ET

$100,000 Affirmed Success Stakes, 6 furlongs, Dirt, New York-breds 4 & Up

Seven go in the Affirmed Success, which will be run over a sloppy Big A main track. We’d probably go in a different direction if the race were run on a dry surface, but in the mud, 7-Today’s Flavor is an empty-your-pockets play: He has the most early speed, the tactically advantageous post, and prior success on off tracks. Look for him to go right to the front, and never look back; we will bet him to win at 8/5. The bet: Aqueduct, Race 8, $50 to win on 7-Today’s Flavor.

Santa Anita Park, Race 6, 6:35 pm ET

$100,000 Santa Barbara Stakes, 1 ½ miles, Turf, Fillies & Mares 4 & Up

The mile and a half Santa Barbara is the first of two pretty good turf stakes for older females on today’s Santa Anita card, both of which will be run on firm going. It drew seven runners. We like 6-Seisai, an Irish import from the John Sadler barn. She was last seen running last in the Royal Heroine on April 1; we think she deserves another look, partly because that was her first American start, and partly because the 12 furlong distance here should suit her better than the mile she ran in the Royal Heroine. We will bet her to win at 3-1. The bet: Santa Anita, Race 6, $40 to win on 6-Seisai.

Santa Anita Park, Race 8, 7:37 pm ET
Grade 3 Wilshire Stakes, 1 mile, Turf, Fillies & Mares 4 & Up

The Grade 3 Wilshire Stakes drew a field of seven. The pick is 3-Rhea Moon, who simply looks better than the rest. She capped off an excellent 3-year-old season last fall with stakes wins, when she took the Autumn Miss and the American Oaks, and while she’s coming off a bit of a layoff, if she runs her race, she’s headed to the winner’s circle. We will bet her to win at 5/2. The bet: Santa Anita, Race 8, $40 to win on 3-Rhea Moon.

That’s all for today. Until the next time, enjoy the racing, be safe, and, as always, good luck at the windows.
