Garrity's Sunday Stakes picks the Adirondack, Oaks Invitational at Saratoga; La Jolla Handicap at Del Mar

Three stakes races, two at Saratoga and one at Del Mar, comprise our action for this summer Sunday. We expect fast dirt and firm turf for all three, so let’s go.

Saratoga Race Course, Race 4, 2:49 pm ET

Grade 3 Adirondack Stakes, 6 ½ furlongs, Dirt, 2-Year-Old Fillies

Nine juvenile fillies line up for the Adirondack. The Saratoga dirt course has been very speed-favoring of late, and that makes the pick 3-Promise of Hope, who is very fast, and who has the tactical advantage of drawing outside. Look for this Tom Amoss trainee to pop out of the gate quickly, go right to the front, and not look back. We see Promise of Hope wiring this group, and will bet her to win at 4-1. The bet: Saratoga, Race 4, $40 to win on 3-Promise of Hope.

Saratoga Race Course, Race 7, 4:29 pm ET

$750,000 Saratoga Oaks Invitational, 1 3/16 miles, Turf, 3-Year-Old Fillies

Six go in the Saratoga Oaks Invitational. Chad Brown trains half of them – he seemingly trains half the turf horses in New York – and while his entrants will get bet, we are looking elsewhere, specifically to 3-With the Moonlight, whose connections (she is a Godolphin homebred trained by Charlie Appleby) have virtually owned these summer turf stakes in New York. We made the mistake of going against them yesterday, when Nations Pride won the Derby Invitational; we will not make that mistake again, and will bet With the Moonlight to win at 5/2. The bet: Saratoga, Race 7, $50 to win on 3-With the Moonlight.

Del Mar, Race 5, 7:07 pm ET

Grade 3 La Jolla Handicap, 1 1/16 miles, Turf, 3-Year-Olds

The La Jolla, a mile and a sixteenth turf stakes for 3-year-olds, drew a field of six. We like 2-Stayincotai, an Irish-bred colt whose American racing debut impressed us very much: He closed furiously from far back to win a Del Mar allowance on July 23. We expect the early pace in this race to be fast, which should play to his stretch-running style quite nicely. He’ll probably be last early, but we think Stayincotai will be first where it counts; we will bet him to win at 6-1. The bet: Del Mar, Race 5, $40 to win on 2-Stayincotai.
