God's Tipster's Wednesday Saratoga Pick: The 5th's a turf sprint – one maiden has stakes experience, cuts back

After a profitable July we head into August with forward momentum. This entire month we will be focused on racing from Saratoga. Once again we’re expecting fast and firm conditions beneath sunny skies. Let’s get started.

Wednesday at Saratoga:

Race 5: Sosua Summer - 1 pt win (US Morning Line Odds: 2/1)

Maidens sprint 5 1/2 furlongs on turf and of the runners who have already raced, there appear to be three main contenders: Upper Level, who appears to be the controlling speed from the rail and will be making his turf debut, Java Buzz, our 9/5 ML favorite off a strong 3rd place finish while encountering traffic and Sosua Summer, who cuts back from longer. I’m siding with Sosua Summer here for Bill Mott, who celebrated a birthday a few days ago. Sosua Summer comes out of a strong maiden race last time out and I think he’ll benefit from the cutback in distance. The last (and only) time he sprinted, he ran into Big Invasion who has won four straight stakes races since that maiden race and Capture the Time who won his next two starts sprinting on turf before placing in a Stakes race. There aren’t many maidens out there with Stakes experience but Sosua Summer brings that to the table too. Class edge.
