I didn’t love Saturday’s races but took a shot anyway and played the role of bridesmaid. In Race 6, our crazy long shot, Missy Greer went to the lead just as I had hoped. She led until mid-stretch when she was overhauled and battled on gamely for third at nearly 21/1 odds. In Race 9, the Jim Dandy, Zandon had every chance to win this race but Epicenter absolutely drowned this field in a much more convincing win than the 1 1/2 lengths he won by might reflect. In Race 10, I was hoping Capensis would be able to run back to that eye-popping maiden win but he caught a bigger, more experienced field and wasn’t up to the task finishing sixth.
A 2.70/1 second and a near 21/1 third place finish from three selections on the day.

Race 9: Surfer Dude - 1 pt win (US Morning Line Odds: 12/1)
Today’s Grade 2 Amsterdam is one of the more interesting races of the meet. We have last year’s Breeder’s Cup Juvenile winner returning in his first race since that win and have Saudi Derby winner, Pinehurst returning off a March layoff and there’s a chance they’ll be battling for favoritism by post time. I landed on Surfer Dude here. Some horses are like people and they age well and I think that’s what’s beginning to happen with Surfer Dude. His three most recent starts have been the three fastest races of his career. His dam, Tiz Miz Sue, improved with age too, winning her first Grade 1 race in her final start of a 32 race career. Sire Curlin had a more uniformly strong career. Jose Ortiz picks up the mount today and his brother rode this one twice before pretty recently, a win and a place. This will be his first career start at Saratoga and I like that he draws outside. A place he hasn’t been yet in his ten race career. Value at 12/1..
