Thursday’s Race Recap from Saratoga:

Saratoga:

Race 6: 6th@ 12.50/1

Race 9: SCRATCH

Race 6 was a good example of a poor ride and a horse I’d take another chance on next time at probable decent odds. I was hoping Julian Leparoux would send Cold Call to the lead from his rail post, but he didn’t. Instead he took back and decided to come around horses. Then he rode her tentatively through the stretch and she actually came with a nice late run. Too little too late though. After the rain they took Race 9 off the turf and scratched our selection.

Back to Saratoga for a FUN little Friday card which includes the Curlin stakes for three-year-olds who are prepping for the Travers, which is the meet’s feature race later on in August. Let’s get started!

Friday at Saratoga:

Race 7: Gilded Age - 1 pt win (US Morning Line Odds: 10/1)

The Curlin Stakes at a mile and an eighth is one of the preps for the crown jewel of the Saratoga meet, the Travers. This year the Curlin drew an evenly matched field of nine runners. I don’t trust Creative Minister here as the likely favorite. I think trainer Ken McPeek might’ve asked too much of this horse too soon and I think he’d do much better with a freshening. Artorious is one of the ones but is out of a dam who was a crack sprinter and not known for her prowess at longer distances. Earlier this year, Gilded Age was one of my early Kentucky Derby picks. He broke his maiden at Churchill Downs coming from off the pace and he chased eventual Preakness winner, Early Voting in the Withers finishing a head behind eventual Grade 2 Rebel winner, Un Ojo. After a full effort in the UAE derby he returned from a long layoff and rallied strongly for the win. He had a fast pace that day to close into and won’t get that fast a pace today, but I’ve always thought highly of this runner and he continues to improve with every start. Dam, Angela Renee was a Grade 1 winner. Upset potential.

Best of luck to everyone playing Friday’s races from Saratoga!
