Dirt 6 Furlongs|2yo MSW |Purse: $60K

Six male 2yo’s go to post in this first event at Colonial and the ML favorite, 6-Instinctual (2/1) is going to take a lot of money with the tandem of Irad/Pletcher and Good Magic, fourth leading first crop sire. I am fading this horse in favor of 3-Two Phil’s (4/1), a half-brother to graded stakes winner Spun To Run, he debuted at Churchill Downs on June 23 and ran a 72 Equibase number. He has two works since and his recent, a :48.4, was just five days ago. Trainer Larry Rivelli an excellent 50% with 2yo males in their second start and sire Hard Spun 24% with the same parameters.

Turf 5 1/2 Furlongs|2yo MSW |Purse: $60K

Seven go in this 3rd race and I am Going with Todd Pletcher’s $300K colt 1-Sendero (8/5). By City Of Light, who is by leading sire Quality Road, his sire has yet to get a win in three tries and this will be his progeny’s first attempt at turf. This surface may be a solid match given City Of Light won the Pegasus in the slop (slop runners typically make good turf horses) and his dam, Trishas Even, was 2/1-1-0 on turf.

Turf 5 1/2 Furlongs|3↑ Van Clief Stakes|Purse: $150K

I am going with 5-Front Run The Fed (4/1) because I believe this is the race why Irad Ortiz is in town. He is coming off a nine month layoff. The last time he returned after a significant time was in a Grade 3 race at Kentucky Downs, where he was dq’d from first place. He has been working forwardly for this return and takes a class drop from his last campaign – a good place to pick up from.

Turf 5 1/2 Furlongs|3↑ Fillies and Mares Andy Guest Stakes |Purse: $150K

This race has eleven going in it and the big number of $833K earned by 8-Change Of Control (3/1) dwarfs all others in this. A 6yo Fed Biz mare, she is 17/4-6-3 at the distance and enters today off a respectable fourth in the Grade 1 Jaipur Stakes after stalking Casa Creed, Arrest Me Red and True Valour, all top turf sprinters. She shot a :47.4 work at Churchill Downs before taking a slow blow at Colonial. She is my choice.
