Standing near the paddock yesterday as the 3rd race was just finishing, a Churchill Downs worker walks up and asked, “what was that?” I replied that I had Woodline and Top Of The Charts is not a horse I would have considered.” He replied, “there’s some funny s**t going on here,” and I said, “maybe, and we both just got an ass kicking.”
Churchill Downs Race 1 - $50K Maiden Claiming
2yo’s going 5.5 furlongs
This race is the boneyard for two year olds. The sires and/or trainers of the three experienced horses in this have an extremely poor, if not zero, second start percentage. So, I am going with 6-Kbcya Later (4/1) by Broken Vow, a 20% winning sire. Trainer Joe Sharp 13% in this situation and 26% with Tyler Gaffalione.
Churchill Downs Race 3 - $120K Maiden Special
Fillies and mares, 3yo’s↑ going eleven furlongs on turf
Am certainly fading the morning line fave 1-Pure Country (3/1) as Rafael Bejarano is 0/15 on the turf and 3/36 in routes. In the 4th race at Churchill yesterday, Florent Geroux gave a brilliant ride on Totally Boss as he rated the 7yo gelding perfectly, and today he has 10-Duvet Day (5/1), a 3yo Irish bred filly by Aussie sire Starspangledbanner and broodmare sire Montjue (25th leading). I am going to pass on her because the sire was a champion sprinter in Europe and his successful progeny have followed that path. I am going with Saffie Joseph Jr.’s five-year-old mare 5-Red Light Racer (6/1). Lightly raced for her age, six times, this Medaglia d’Oro daughter needed that last race after the long layoff and this distance is straight in her breeding wheelhouse.
Happy Hunting!
