Our Kentucky Derby day began with Surfer Dude stalking the pace and holding off the closers under a perfectly timed ride by Irad Ortiz in Race 2. In Race 5, Speak of the Devil got us our second winner on the card as she was taken well off a slow early pace and stormed by the field turning for home drawing off to an impressive US debut as she served notice that she’ll be a force to be reckoned with in the turf mile division. In Race 7, the Pat Day Mile, Jack Christopher made a triumphant return to the races winning in convincing fashion off a long layoff. Major General argued the pace before calling it a day. In Race 8, the Grade 1 Derby City Distaff we had Just One Time and she had to change her tactics from her rail post. Instead of closing from off the pace she was sent to the lead and led til mid-stretch where she was passed by Obligatory and Four Graces for top honors. In Race 9, Smokin T. stalked and rallied for fourth. In Race 11, Kentucky Ghost pulled up on the far turn after going wrong and was vanned off. I hope everything is ok with him. In the Kentucky Derby it was a MASSIVE upset as Rich Strike stormed up the rail to register one of the greatest upsets in the history of the race. An impossible result from a handicapping standpoint that likely occurred because of the rapid early pace that caused the race to completely fall apart at the end. Mo Donegal was taken ten wide on the far turn and rallied to miss a photo for fourth. In Race 14 we had debut runner Blow Torch who stalked a wicked early pace before giving up the ghost.

Let’s head to Belmont Park to close out the week. It rained all day on Saturday but Sunday will be dry so I’m expecting less-than perfect track conditions. Let’s get to it.

Sunday at Belmont Park:

Race 9: Once a Giant - 1 pt win (US Morning Line Odds: 8/1)

Our final race of the week is a tough little Starter Allowance where they’ll run a mile and a sixteenth. A few have a shot in here but Once a Giant impressed me with his maiden win back on April 8 at Aqueduct. He was able to get away with a slow-ish opening quarter which was key but he leveled out nicely in the stretch to win off by nearly 8 lengths. He shouldn’t need the early lead today and this $235k purchase with a bullet workout since his most recent start looks like good value at 8/1 or higher.

Best of luck to everyone playing Sunday’s races from Belmont Park!
