Saturday’s Race Recap from Gulfstream Park & Oaklawn:
(All odds US)
Replays for yesterday’s races from Gulfstream can be found below:
Race 6: 2nd@ 7.00/1
Race 10: 6th@ 8.50/1
Race 11: SCRATCH
Race 12: 1st@ 0.50/1 🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥
Race 14: 2nd@ 3.20/1
Our day began in Race 6 with the Ghostzapper Stakes and our selection, Capocostello rallied for second but was no match for the heavily favored, Fearless who won convincingly. In Race 10, Shivaree ran near the back of the pack early and the speed duel we were hoping for never materialized leaving Shivaree 6th when all was done. After a scratch in Race 11, our BEST BET- Kathleen O. gave us our first winner in the month of April with an impressive score in the Gulfstream Park Oaks. Her next stop is the Kentucky Oaks. In the Florida Derby, our selection Charge It ran an outstanding race considering it was the third race of his career and came up just short with yet another second place finish. He’ll be primed for a Run at the Roses in Kentucky in a few weeks for sure.
Race replays for yesterday’s races from Oaklawn can be found here:
Race 6: 4th@ 3.80/1
Race 10: 5th@ 1.70/1
Race 11: 6th@ 34.80/1
Race 12: 6th@ 37.10/1
In Race 6 at Oaklawn, King Ottoman stalked a fast early pace but went a bit too fast because he only had so much fight left in the lane and checked in 4th. In the Fantasy Stakes, Dream Lith went off favored off of an 8/1 morning line but failed to fire checking in fifth. In Race 11, Edge to Edge stalked a fast pace early, was fanned 5 wide at the far turn and finished evenly for sixth. In the Arkansas Derby, Ben Diesel was steadied early, taken 5 wide and flattened out.
We took our chances with a few bombs today but it was our day’s Best Bet who came through for us - Kathleen O. , with two second place finishes including the Florida Derby at Gulfstream. At Oaklawn it was a forgettable afternoon as our selections couldn’t do better than fourth. I’m happy Oaklawn’s season is over til next year for our purposes and look forward to Keeneland opening soon.
Let’s head to Aqueduct for Sunday’s races. We’re expecting some morning showers but with no turf racing on the agenda that shouldn’t matter much. Let’s get to it!
Sunday at Aqueduct:
Race 6: Go Lime - 1 pt win (US Morning Line Odds: 20/1)
NY bred maidens race a mile and this is an interesting group. The rail horse will take money but comes from a barn that has yet to hit the board with five runners this meet and has had a chilly winter overall - toss. The 2 horse - Khufu will take money but has only raced on polytrack and turf and is completely unproven on dirt. Our likely favorite is Sinful Dancer whose speed figure ranked last time off nearly a year layoff. Go Lime is an interesting proposition for a few reasons, not the least of which are his odds which will be high. His trainer won the stakes race at Aqueduct on Saturday but this one still isn’t likely to attract much attention due to his low profile connections. Last time out the put blinkers on him at 50/1 odds and he showed up with an improved effort - closing into a slow pace for third. That race has seen its first two finishers improve their speed figure in their next start by 7 points and 10 points respectively and even the runners behind Go Lime that day have returned with more pep in their step. This one will be motoring late and looking to pick up the pieces after an early speed duel.
Best of luck to everyone playing Sunday’s races from Aqueduct!
