Garrity's Sunday Horse Racing Picks for Aqueduct and Oaklawn include the Damon Runyon Stakes
We have three plays today, two at Aqueduct, and one at Oaklawn Park. It’s an all-dirt lineup today, and we expect a fast main track for all three. Let’s go.
Aqueduct, Race 6, 3:54 pm ET
$100,000 Damon Runyon Stakes, 7 furlongs, Dirt, 3-Year-Olds
Five go in the Damon Runyon, and we’ll make one thing clear right off the bat: on paper, 1-Best Idea looks best. But he’s going to be 1/10, and we are taking a shot against him, as his chances of winning, while high, are lower than his odds. That’s an underlay, and the rule in this game is always to bet against an underlay.
We like 2-Mister Larry. He broke his maiden quite impressively back in January, and then faltered, as so many horses do, in his first try against winners last month. He looks poised to rebound here, partly from having more experience, but mostly because we see the pace scenario favoring him: we see Mister Larry sitting mid-pack early, behind what could be a contested early pace, and should have no problem finishing strongly. That’s enough for us: we will bet Mister Larry at 12-1. The bet: Aqueduct, Race 6, $35 to win on 2-Mister Larry.
Aqueduct, Race 7, 4:25 pm ET
Allowance/Optional Claiming, 1 mile, Dirt, New York-bred Fillies & Mares 4 & Up
This second-level allowance at the Big A drew a field of seven. We like 5-Wasp, who showed real promise at the start of her career, finishing first and second in all four of her starts, before faltering in her last few races. She looks poised to rebound here, especially coming as it’s her second start off a layoff, and she should consequently be in peak physical condition. Look for Wasp to sit just behind the leader early, and pull away late; we will bet her to win at 7/2. The bet: Aqueduct, Race 7, $40 to win on 5-Wasp.
Oaklawn Park, Race 8, 5:39 pm ET
Allowance/Optional Claiming, 1 1/16 miles, Dirt, 4 & Up
Seven older horses go to the gate in this tough allowance race in Arkansas. We like 3-My Sixth Sense, an admirably consistent horse who tries hard every time, with most of his recent efforts coming up a bit short (he’s finished second or third in each of his last five starts). We think that has more to do with the competition he’s been facing than a lack of will to win on his part, and he looks like he’s found a group here that he can handle. We like his post, too: he’s a pace-presser, and having drawn an inside slot, he should get a very good trip, sitting just behind the leaders, and overtaking them at the top of the stretch. We will bet My Sixth to win at 4-1. The bet: Oaklawn Park, Race 9, $40 to win on 3-My Sixth Sense.
That’s all for today. Until the next time, enjoy the racing, be safe, and, as always, good luck at the windows.
