Wednesday pick for Tampa Bay Downs:

Race 4: Nette Nette - 2 pts win - BEST BET (US Morning Line Odds: 9/5)

Maidens sprint 6 furlongs here and none of the ones who have already run looks like a future Breeder’s Cup winner so I’m taking a shot with a new face. Yes, there’s a chance she may go favored here but even without any races under her belt yet, she’s got an interesting resumé. Nette Nette was purchased for $950k by the Allen Stable Inc. which is slightly more than 11x her sire, Empire Maker’s rate. This one’s dam - Vaulcluse – retired undefeated in three career starts back in 2008 for trainer Tom Albertrani who’s not a trainer known for pushing horses to win early. Of the dam’s first 6 foals to race, all six have won within their first three career starts. 5 of 6 have won within their first two career starts including eventual Grade 1 winner Lukes Alley, who was a multiple graded stakes placed horse. Another sibling - Arrifina – went 5 for 6 in her career winning her debut by 10 lengths. Trainer Shug McGaughey is currently 0 for 3 at this meet and that may inflate our odds a bit from contrarians who think he’s going cold but all three of those starts produced strong efforts - equal to or better than they had been running. Workouts look pretty typical for a McGaughey first time starter. They’ve taken their time with this runner and I’m looking forward to seeing what this one has in the tank.

Best of luck to everyone playing Wednesday’s races from Tampa Bay Downs!
