Gulfstream Park: Race 4: 1st@ 0.60/1 🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥

Race 9: 5th@ 2.00/1

Our week began with a SCALDING HOT WIN as Scalding - sent off at odds-on favoritism took the lead as the gates opened and didn’t let anyone pass him winning gate to wire as our day’s BEST BET. In Race 9, we were rained off the turf and onto the synthetic track. Quick Tempo battled with Dubai Key through blistering fractions and succumbed in mid-stretch to that one. Had this race originally been carded for synthetic, I would have opted out but those are the breaks when you have pop up storms in Florida.

You might notice fewer selections in January than in other months. I am going to avoid races where many horses are getting Lasix for the first time. Since most two-year-olds in the U.S. aren’t allowed to run on Lasix and two-year-olds become three-year-olds on Jan. 1, many will transition to Lasix. When they do, some will run much improved races. This can be difficult to predict so I will avoid these races and types of horses until they get a few races under their belts with Lasix. Over the last few years, January has been a challenging month for us and I’m looking to change that trend.

Let’s take a look at a few races from Gulfstream for Thursday. I’m expecting fast and firm conditions there. Let’s get to it.

Thursday pick for Gulfstream Park:

Race 3: Miss Italy - 1 pt win (US Morning Line Odds: 8/1)

Bottom level claimers race a mile here and there looks to be plenty of speed. That should bode well for our selection, Miss Italy, who may be overlooked in the wagering based on her losses by double digits. She owns a win over the surface and we should get every bit of 8/1 on her. At her best she fits right with these and if jockey Marco Meneses can get her moving early enough she should have enough to run down the tired speed runners.

Good luck to everyone playing Thursday’s races from Gulfstream!
