There is a whole lot of two year old racing today as owners/trainers are getting their last races in before housing their derby/oaks hopefuls until early spring.
Race 9 Churchill Downs - The $200K Lively Shively Stakes
2yo’s going six and a half furlongs on dirt
With a dry and fast track, I will take Asmussen’s colt 3-Chattalot (7/2) who competed yet did not like the sloppy going in his last race and last workout. However, his 5th five furlong work of 1:00.6 shows he is still in form. 8-Hoist The Gold (5/1) is going to be tough today as well. His last race is a mystery and his works leading up to today have been good, with a 3 furlong in :35 and four in :47.2 on Nov. 14.
Race 10 Churchill Downs – The G2 $400K Golden Rod Stakes
2yo fillies going eight and one half furlong on the dirt
4-Sandstone (8/5) 1-Famed (2/1) 3-Secret Oath (15/1) and 6-Yuugiri (6/1) are the primary contenders of the field of eight. Although the public will be all over Sandstone, given the way she has won her last two, I am going with Yuugiri, who was the beaten favorite to Sandstone and has come out of that race with an excellent :46.8 work and :48.8. Sandstone has had a couple lazy works, which seems like she was pointed to her last win, and it took something out of her. Watch out for D. Wayne’s Secret Oath, after all, how often do you see a horse work a flat :45?
Race 11 Churchill Downs – The G2 $400K Jockey Club Stakes
2yo’s going eight and one half furlong on the dirt
I am still going to ride the bandwagon of 6-Tiz The Bomb (3/1) who was awarded prize money in the BC Juvenile Turf after the Del Mar debacle of Modern Games. This colt’s pedigree calls for either turf or dirt and coming from Tiznow blood and distance is not his challenge.
Race 12 Churchill Downs – The $200K Fern Creek Stakes
2yo filles going six and a half furlongs on dirt
Why stop now with 8-Sweet Dani Girl (5/2)? She has done everything asked of her and won off the pace in both of her races. She returned to a 1:00.6 workout and the added half furlong is a plus. She will manage this gang easily.
