Today was a tough day. Two second place finishes, a fourth and two fifth place finishes. I take some solace in the fact that after checking the other major handicappers on the NYRA circuit it looks as though we weren’t alone. None of them had a good day. In Race 2, Askin for a Baskin ran a disappointing 5th with no excuse. His speed figures were likely inflated as the other runner who defeated him also ran poorly in Race 8. In Race 8, our longshot selection - Will Sing for Wine made a big move on the turn and flattened out. The entire complexion of the race changed when Ducale - the likely speed - flipped in the paddock and scratched. After a scratch in Race 10, Raging Bull had perfect pace setup but faded in the lane. In the final race of the day, Phantom Smoke sat just off the speed, looked poised to pounce in the lane but could not get by.
At Arlington in the Beverly D, Mean Mary put away the other pace horse but couldn’t hold off the late run from Santa Barbara.
We close out the week with a sunny Sunday at Saratoga. Let’s get to work!
Sunday picks for Saratoga:
Race 4: Saratoga Pal - 1 pt win (US Morning Line Odds: 6/1)
The fastest horse in the world is apparently breaking from the inside here - Water’s Edge who’s morning line odds are 1/2 but Saratoga is known as the “graveyard of favorites” and from a pace standpoint, Saratoga Pal will be closing from off the pace and appears to be the main closer. This runner has a win at the track and distance which no other runner can say. 6/1 odds look good to us.

Race 5: Midnight Stroll - 1 pt win (Us Morning Line Odds: 8/1)
Maiden 2yo fillies race 6 furlongs and there are a few regally bred youngsters here. One of those is Midnight Stroll and she’ll likely get overlooked due to her lower profile connections but they can fire at a price and this barn wins with 21% of their two-year-olds. Sire Not This Time has been red hot with debut runners and this one has some fast workouts on the tab.
Race 7: Never Explain - 2 pts win - BEST BET- (US Morning Line Odds: 9/2)
Trainer Shug McGaughey connected with a 7/2 winner on Saturday’s card and he’s got an improving son of Street Sense here. This runner cost pretty penny and raced at Indiana Downs before shipping to Saratoga to nearly upset a turf race here on July 24. That day he earned the field’s top speed figure and looks primed for a strong effort once again.
Best of luck 🍀🍀🍀 to everyone playing Sunday’s races from Saratoga!
