Garrity's Sunday Stakes has picks at Monmouth Park, Saratoga and Del Mar
Sundays are usually light as far as stakes races go, but today there are quite a few, and we have four plays, all in stakes, and we expect fast dirt and firm turf in all of them. Let’s go.
Monmouth Park, Race 11, 5:02 pm ET
$100,000 Oceanport Stakes, 1 1/16 miles, Turf, 3 & Up
Chad Brown has made a habit in recent years of sending his second-string horses to win stakes races at Monmouth Park, and that is a trend we expect to continue in the Oceanport, as favored 8-Sacred Life looks overwhelmingly the likeliest winner. It’s been a while since the 6-year-old won a race -- his last victory, in fact, was in this race last year -- but his races since last summer were all in graded stakes, where he faced much, much better horses than he will see at the Jersey Shore this afternoon. Look for him to win with a very strong late run. We will bet him to win at 8/5. The bet: Monmouth Park, Race 11, $40 to win on 8-Sacred Life.
Saratoga, Race 8, 5:05 pm ET
Grade 2 Adirondack Stakes, 6 ½ furlongs, DIrt, 2-Year-Old Fillies
The Adirondack drew a good field of nine juvenile fillies. We like 7-Wicked Halo, who has high speed, a requirement with the way the dirt course at Saratoga is playing, and an outside post, which is a tactical advantage. Look for her to go right to the front, and not look back. We will bet Wicked Halo to win at 7/2. The bet: Saratoga, Race 8, $40 to win on 7-Wicked Halo.
Saratoga, Race 9, 5:39 pm ET
Grade 3 Saratoga Oaks Invitational, 1 ⅜ miles, Turf, 3-Year-Old Fillies
A European horse, State of Rest, won the big turf race at Saratoga, the Grade 1 Saratoga Derby, yesterday, and we are expecting another Euro to take the Saratoga Oaks: It’s 7-Creative Flair, a Godolphin homebred who will be saddled by trainer Charlie Appleby. While she has shown good form in six races in Europe this year and last, we think she’ll be better today, as like virtually all Godolphin horses, she has a magnificent European turf pedigree, and there are hints that she will like the going today, which will be firmer than she ever saw in Europe. She looks to be the class of the field, and that makes her 7/2 morning line price look very, very appealing. We will bet her to win. The bet: Saratoga, Race 9, $50 to win on 7-Creative Flair.
Del Mar, Race 9, 9:00 pm ET
Grade 3 La Jolla Handicap, 1 1/16 miles, Turf, 3-Year-Olds
Six go in the La Jolla. We like 6-Cathkin Peak, an Irish-bred colt who starts for trainer Phil D’Amato. He won his first two U.S. starts last year, breaking his maiden at Del Mar in November, and winning the Eddie Logan Stakes at Santa Anita in December. He did not win his first start of 2021, when he ran second in the Pasadena Stakes in February, but the only horse to beat him that day was Rock Your World, who went on to win the Santa Anita Derby, and run in the Kentucky Derby and the Belmont Stakes. There is no colt like Rock Your World in this race, which makes this a relatively easy pick. We will bet Cathkin Peak to win at 2-1. The bet: Del Mar, Race 9, $40 to win on 6-Cathkin Peak.
That’s all for today. Until the next time, enjoy the racing, be safe, and, as always, good luck at the windows.
