Sunday Horse Racing: Garrity picks Churchill Downs, Belmont, Santa Anita and Lone Star Park

Garrity's first post is at 4:22 pm EDT.

We have four plays on this spring Sunday, and we are going around the horn, from Kentucky to New York to California to Texas. We expect fast dirt and firm turf in all four races, so let’s go.

Churchill Downs, Race 8, 4:22 pm ET
Starter Allowance/Optional Claiming, 1 mile, Dirt, 4 & Up

This one looks easy: 3-Exulting has superior speed figures, and comes off two wins in a row at this starter allowance level. Those races were at Oaklawn Park, where the competition is plenty tough and we think he makes it three in a row here. Look for him to be just off the lead early, and to seize command late. We will bet him to win at 2-1. The bet: Churchill Downs, Race 89, $35 to win on 3-Exulting.

Belmont Park, Race 8, 4:40 pm ET

Allowance/Optional Claiming, 6 furlongs, Turf, New York-breds 3 & Up

A field of seven state-breeds lines up for today’s featured race at Belmont Park. We’re on the favorite, 7-Big Package, who finished third at this level at Aqueduct on April 18. That was his first start since September, and we are expecting improvement in his second run off the layoff. Look for him to be mid-pack early, and rolling late. We will bet him to win at 9/5. The bet: Belmont Park, Race 8, $30 to win on 7-Big Package.

Santa Anita Park, Race 4, 5:43 pm ET
$50,000 Maiden Claiming, 1 mile, Turf, Fillies & Mares 3 & Up

This maiden claimer out West drew a field of eight. Most of them appear to be career maidens, having unsuccessfully tried many, many times to win a race, and this has us looking to a lightly raced filly, and a big price, in the form of 4-Clever Intrusion. She’s a 4-year-old with a decent turf pedigree (by Archarcharch out of a Smarty Jones mare), but what we like the most is that she’s dropping into this $50k maiden level after running in a Maiden Special Weight race in her last (and only) career starts. As we have noted many, many times, this is the biggest class drop in racing, and we will take a stab that she will be good enough to beat this very ordinary group. We will bet her to win at 15-1. The bet: Santa Anita, Race 4, $30 to win on 4-Clever Intrusion.

Lone Star Park, Race 8, 6:51 pm ET

Allowance, 7 ½ furlongs, Turf, Fillies & Mares 3 & Up

A big field of eleven goes to the post in this Lone Star allowance race. We like the one all the way on the outside, 11-Gastown, who broke her maiden smartly two back at the Fair Grounds, and then faltered in her last race, finishing a well-beaten third. We are willing to excuse that last result, as it was her first try against winners and it was run on conventional dirt after being rained off the turf. Back on grass here, she should be able to show the strong stretch run of her maiden victory. We will bet her to win at 5-1. The bet: Lone Star Park, Race 8, $30 to win on 11-Gastown.

That’s all for today. Until tomorrow, enjoy the racing, be safe, and, as always, good luck at the windows.
