Garrity has a Dad's Hat Happy Hour of races at Tampa Day, Laurel Park, Fair Grounds, Santa Anita & Gulfstream

Grab some Rye, sip slowly, and bet 5 races from 5 tracks going off in less than a half hour. Garrity's first post is 4:20 pm EST.

Today’s simulcasting lineup is relatively quiet, with few stakes races carded. Because of that, we’re going to do an installment of Dad’s Hat Happy Hour Handicapping, with five plays in five races at five tracks, all of which go off in less than an hour. We expect fast dirt and firm turf in all races. Let’s go.

Tampa Bay Downs, Race 8, 4:20 pm ET

Allowance/Optional Claiming, 1 mile, Turf, 3 & Up

A field of ten lines up for this second-level allowance. We’re all in on 6-J Beresford Tipton, who starts for trainer Arnaud Delacour. He’s in excellent form, winning on the synthetic surface at Presque Isle Downs in October, and just missing, finishing second by a nose, in a virtually identical spot at Tampa Bay on Dec. 4. His last race looks good on paper, but we think it was even better that it appears, as he closed into a slow pace. We expect legitimate fractions up front in this heat, which should set up his late charge quite nicely. We will bet him to win at 7/2. The bet: Tampa Bay Downs, Race 8, $25 to win on 6-J Beresford Tipton.

Laurel Park, Race 9, 4:23 pm ET

$40,000 Maiden Claiming, 5 ½ furlongs, Dirt, Fillies & Mares 3 & Up

This maiden claimer dirt sprint drew nine entrants. Speed and pace figures mark favored 6-Bourbon Wildcat as strictly the one to beat. She’s run four times, and hit the board in all of them, with two seconds and two thirds. She gets what looks like the perfect setup today, as she’s got the most natural early speed in the field, drew an advantageous outside post, and shortens up to 5 ½ furlongs after running six furlongs in her previous races. At 9/5, she’s not going to make anyone rich, but there is value in every winner, and Bourbon Wildcat should win this. We will bet her to win. The bet: Laurel Park, Race 9, $25 to win on 6-Bourbon Wildcat.

Fair Grounds, Race 6, 4:25 pm ET

$15,000 Claiming, 1 mile, Turf, 3 & Up

This is a real handicapper’s race, a wide-open claimer with a full field of thirteen. One thing that is noticeable in the group, at least to us, is a lack of speed, which has us looking at a horse we think might be able to steal the race on the front end, and do so at a big price. The pick is 9-Caramel Angel, a 3-year-old who made some hearts flutter in his last start, setting the pace for six furlongs, at 103-1 odds, before fading and finishing seventh. We think he may get a very easy lead in this spot, easy enough that the rest of the field may not catch him, and at 30-1, that makes him deserving of a play. We will bet him to win. The bet: Fair Grounds, Race 6, $25 to win on 9-Caramel Angel.

Santa Anita, Race 5, 4:37 pm ET

$25,000 Claiming, 1 1/18 miles, Turf, 3 & Up

This nine-furlong turf claimer drew a field of eight. We’re going with speed, in the form of 4-Turn the Switch, a 4-year-old gelding from the Bob Hess barn. He is dropping in class, he’s going to get the lead, and we think that he’s going to win this race in wire-to-wire fashion. We will bet him to win at 4-1. The bet: Santa Anita, Race 5, $25 to win on 4-Turn the Switch.

Gulfstream Park, Race 10, 4:42 pm ET

Allowance/Optional Claiming, 1 mile, Turf, 3 & Up

Twelve go in this first-level allowance turf race. The pick is 2-Mo Ready, a 3-year-old from the Todd Pletcher barn. He’s a New York bred who comes into this race after running in two stakes races, and we think he will thrive against the lesser company here. Look for him to be get a good stalking trip from his inside post, to move to the front at the top of the stretch, and to hold off the closers late. We will bet him to win at 3-1. The bet: Gulfstream Park, Race 10, $25 to win on 2-Mo Ready.

That’s all for today. Until the next time, enjoy the racing, be safe, and, as always, good luck at the windows.
