RT handicaps the first 6 races at Laurel Park Friday, and offers picks for the 7th, 8th, and 9th
Laurel Park 12.11.2020
Again, yesterday, we had the right horses identified and the wrong wagers. Let’s improve today.
Race 1 – $40k Md Sp Wt for 2yo fillies going one mile
#2 Ephemeral (20/1) is a second starter for Kelly Rubley who has more in the tank than appears. Her OBS test was 69 over a par of 67 and her workouts have been sharp, putting in a :48.6 after her last race. Much improvement expected for this daughter of Mineshaft and granddaughter of Afleet Alex. #6 Shootinforthemoon (5/1) debuted last out at today’s distance, stalked, gave a bid then tired. $75K Malibu Moon son has put in three solid works, including her last at 5f clipping along at 1:01. Michael Trombetta 20% with 2nd time starters. #7 Factor In (8/1) is another Kelly Rubley entry and has smokin hot (42% last 10 days) jockey Victor Carrasco back in the irons. :48.6 work a week ago. She can “factor in” this….bad joke. It’s doubtful that #5 Chloe Rose (6/5) is going to be beat. Trainer/Jockey, husband/wife Brittany & Sheldon Russell absolutely terrific together hitting 38% winners. In her last, she was blasting down the stretch with her ears perked and tail swooshing – both signs of the horse running inside itself, enjoying the pleasure of speed. This stretch out is not concerning as she plenty left in the tank.
Race 2 - $8K Optional Claimer for fillies and mares 3yo+ going nine panels
#6 Don’t Charge It (9/2) has best numbers, yet they come from Penn and that does not seem to be a trustworthy source. #5 Wowwhatabrat (2/1) is off a win for Jamie Ness who is 28% in that situation. Again, that was at Penn and her record at Laurel is a dull 11:1-0-1 for $47K. #2 Boom Boom Gone (10/1) is also coming off a win and her trainer, Marco Salazar is 0% with winners returning. #4 Nana’s Shoes (8/5) will take a lot of money in this given her recent form and has hot jockey Sheldon Russell in the irons. Michael Gorham’s barn has been as cold as you can get hitting 0 winners in the past thirty days at this locale. I like #1 Beyond Forever (10/1) having Forest Boyce back on board, a 19:4-7-2 record for $143K at Laurel and the only horse in this race to get this distance. Her disdain for turf is resounding, so her second race in three weeks on her preferred surface and track are the ticket. She is coming into form and will be flying late.
Race 3 - $62K Optional Claimer for 2yo’s N1x
#2 Heart Rhythm (8/1) dropped to claiming race last out and summarily won, grabbed, and brought to Maryland for Michael Pino (18% off claim). This horse is a stone cold closer and given right pace, could surprise. #4 Maythehorsebwithu (9/5) another Brittany/Sheldon attack as this colt is shipping from Parx and does not have the advantage of Lasix today. Parx shippers typically are not value plays and at that price, I’ll pass. #3 Nobody Knew (4/1) was claimed two back from Claudio and showed improvement at this level in late October. His last two workouts have gone well and he will hit the board today. I like #5 Texas Basin (5/2) who took two tries to break his maiden, two tries to be more competitive in stakes race and now, for the first time, gets a break in class and will race protected. Another late flyer, look for the 3-1-6 to set the pace and Carrasco will phi slamma jamma
Race 4 - $40K Md Sp Wt for 2yo’s going one 5.5F
#1 The Big K (5/1), #2 Brother Skye (20/1), and #6 Escapability (7/5) have all set killer fractions and flattened out. Gulfstream shipper Brother Sky may be the value play in this as he’s a 1st gelding, has recently put in a slower workout (trainer intention) and has a ten-pound break in the weights. #4 Extrasexybigdaddee (9/2) has been crushing his workouts shooting two bullets in his last, going 36.8 from the gate and 1:01. Seeing that it is scratched, put #5 Crownedcountcristo (6/1) outside of the fact that his mom crushed her first out by 8, this colt has had some very fast workouts and then, boom, they stopped. Could that be a wink wink, nod nod, we have something here? Escapability is the one to beat, however, #7 Golden Gulley (3/1) may finally give the bettors the money they’ve wasted.
Race 5 - $5K Claimers 3yo+ NWy or NW4 going 6.5F
#1 Rock And Fellers (6/1) is fourth off a two year layoff and is dropping as fast as that Kardashian woman dumped Humphries. Pass. Expect improvement and a horse for your exotics out of #5 Campari (10/1) #2 Proud Enough (7/2) looks like a player after his first start at Laurel was a solid effort to get place cash. I’m going with Hugh McMahon’s first off the claim #3 Top Me Off (9/2) after all, this one seems to be the only runner that you can make a case for.
Race 6 - $42K Allowance for girls 3yo+ N1x traveling 6.5F
#5 Bluefield (3/1) is a sound choice with her Laurel record of 4:3-0-1 for $48K and 1:1 at the distance. She just ran away from a similar group on Nov. 20, and is third off the layoff. Trainer Justin Nixon killing it of late hitting 60% winners and 100% with Alexander Crispin. Since debuting in August, this horse has done damn near everything it's been asked. Will be a tough out. #4 Remain Anonymous (8/1) has Sheldon Russell aboard and could get a piece of this. I am torn between #3 Excess Capacity and #8 Princess Adira (7/2). Princess Adira comes from Lacey Gaudet’s barn that is on a torrid run and she has seven wins with Jevian Toledo for 86%. Her last three workouts have been very good and this Virginia bred finally gets dry footing today. On the other hand, Excess Capacity is third off a layoff, second race three weeks at Laurel, and was moving like a tremendous machine in the stretch until she had to be checked. She will logically get my cash today.
Race 7 – Nomo Ron
Race 8 – Youngest Of Five
Race 9 - Moonachie
