After scratches (1 & 7), six entered and you can damn near make a case for all of them. Among other variables and starting with SmartCap/Equibase, we have #5 Irish Cork (7/2) with best overall class and near best overall speed. He also has co-best last. In that race, Pennington took him to the lead, drew away by two lengths and then he was gassed in the stretch before being passed by Bird King (who subsequently ran in a $35K aoc at Delaware and got up for second, yet taking a huge drop in speed figs). Money-wise, for a horse who has yet to be first at the wire not withstanding breaking his maiden in January, he has best average of $13K/race this year and $11/K per race at Parx. #6 Powerful Venezuela (3/1) has co-best last, best overall speed and a closing style that can stalk and pounce with the number of speed horses here. #8 Over Sensual has second best overall speed, class and third best last. Solid campaign this year going 8:3-1-1 for $60K. #8 Over Sensual (5/2) betting against Jeremy Laprida in a route race is akin to buying puts against Elon Musk – a losing prop. He is a 36% winner in this situation and is aboard a horse that is third off the layoff, 5:2-1-0 at Parx for $54K and ran one bad race of late and that was on turf – an obvious toss. By eliminating his last race, SmartCap shows him as best overall class speed and last.
My choice: #8 Over Sensual
Parx Race 9 - $50K Optional Claiming for 3yo NWx or NW2 going 6F
So close by the numbers, which will it be, #2 Romanoff (7/2) or #1 Fortheloveofbourbon (2/1)?
For me it will be neither. Like a couple of weeks ago, we have a horse that has just broken its maiden after seven attempts in MSW events. During that time, there were plenty of chances to drop him in class, race against staties and they did none of that.
