RT picks three races at Laurel Park and shares his virtual stable of the horses he's watching Thursday
Three from Laurel Park today
Race 5 - $25K Claiming fillies and mares 3yo+ NW$ or NW2 going 6F on dirt
Using Equibase figures with SmartCap, we have #2 Brut Rose (4/1) as having best speed, class and last. Third off the layoff today, she was pushed to the side and forced in during the stretch drive last out. Full of run, her jockey got her inside and let loose to almost take the race. #6 Live Aid (9/2), #5 Splasherstown (4/1) and #4 Suzysellsseashells (5/2), are going to give Brut Rose and #1 Magical Anna (7/2), our second best class, speed and last, the speed pace to close in on.
My Pick - #2 Brut Rose
Race 6 - $16K Claiming fillies and mares 3yo+ NW3 or 3yo. going one mile on turf
We are going to have another speed duel with #11 La Shirimp (5/1), #2 Miss Chloe G (10/1), #8 Magical Luna (10/1), and #1 Instinctive (5/1). SmartCap has found the best numbers as #5 Pink Pearl (6/1) with best overall class speed and best last two cumulatively. Victor Rosales retains the mount where he is just 2% in routs and 10% on the turf course. #6 Bird Tycoon (9/2) has second best overall class, speed and near best last. Trevor McCarthy, returning today after going through a tough bout of Covid, is a beast on turf, which made him so dominant at Colonial Downs (42%). #4 Who U Gonna Call (5/1) has best overall speed and best last, is 10:2-1-1 for $63K on LrL turf and is dropping back to a level where she’s been effective.
My pick – #6 Bird Tycoon. McCarthy is slated for races 1-3-4, so he should have his sea legs by this.
Race 7 - $42K Allowance for 3yo+ NW2x or staties or NW2 going 8.5 panels on turf
By the numbers - #8 Speed Game (12/1), #2 Mcelmore Avenue (5/1), #6 J Beresford Tipton (9/2), & #7 Mr. d’Angelo (7/2), all are within a whisker away from each other for second best overall class, speed and last. All of these dwarf the #11 Box N Score (5/1), a gelding out of Lemon Drop Kid, who won in his only race in October, then was subsequently benched. He was off for five months and reading between the lines, something must have been amiss as you do not sideline a producing asset. His works have been pedestrian and although second Lasix is in the offing, I’ll pass and wait for the next time.
I am going to roll with #7 Mr. d’Angelo. His LrL turf record of 8:2-2-2 for $125K and 4:1-1-1 for the distance, along with second off the layoff and retention of Jevian Toledo in the irons, makes him a logical choice.
