Bet Horse Racing! Garrity picks the 4th, 6th and 8th races at Indiana Grand

First post is 3:44 pm EDT.

We are dodging the tropical storm battering the East Coast today, and heading to Indiana Grand in the Midwest.

It’s been wet in Indiana, but unlike tracks farther east, like Parx, which had to cancel due to Tropical Storm Isaias, they will be able to race. All races are off turf, and the main track is sloppy, but we have wet-track plays in three races. Let’s go.

Indiana Grand, Race 4, 3:44 pm ET

Maiden Special Weight, 6 furlongs, Dirt, 3 & Up

Eleven go in this maiden race. We like 4-Storm King: he’s a first-time starter by top wet-track sire Empire Maker; he starts for a trainer, Steve Asmussen, who wins at a very good 18% rate with debut horses; and he’s been working very well in the morning, suggesting he will be ready to fire first time out. We doubt that he will be his 9/2 morning line price at post time -- he will be lower -- but we will bet him anyway. The bet: Indiana Grand, Race 4, $30 to win on 4-Storm King.

Indiana Grand, Race 6, 4:40 pm ET

Allowance, 5½ furlongs, Dirt, Indiana-breds 3 & Up

This state-bred first-level allowance drew a field of nine. We’re going with a big price here, 4-Alwaysbehumble, who has good speed, good wet-track breeding, and an inside post position. We think he will be either on or near the lead, and in a race this short, and in the slop, he just may get brave at 30-1 odds. We will bet him to win and to place. The bet: Indiana Grand, Race 6, $25 to win/$10 to place on 4-Alwaysbehumble.

Indiana Grand, Race 8, 5:36 pm ET

Allowance, 5½ furlongs, Dirt, Indiana-breds 3 & Up

The conditions of the 8th in Indiana today are similar to those of the 6th, except that this is a third-level allowance (non-winners of four), which means these horses are much more experienced and faster, than the runners in the 6th. 6-Sacred Kiki Bird is a strong play: he’s got high early speed, a good record on off tracks (two wins and two seconds in five career starts), and he comes from a capable barn. We think he goes right to the front, and splashes his way to the winner’s circle from there. We will bet him to win at 3-1. The bet: Indiana Grand, Race 8, $40 to win on 6-Sacred Kiki Bird.

That’s all for today. Until tomorrow, enjoy the racing, be safe, and, as always, good luck at the windows.
