Wednesday at the track: RT goes to Saratoga and picks the $85K Dayatthespa Stakes, and tri’s and exactas for the 6th using SmartCap

Post time for the $85K Dayatthespa Stakes is 3:02 pm

Todays’ trip is to Saratoga. The weather is a perfect summer day – mid 80’s, low humidity and lots of sunshine.

We’ll start with Race 5, post time 3:02 pm — The $85K Dayatthespa Stakes.

This is 8.5 panels for statie bred girls who are 3yo+ which have not won a sweepstake.

There is going to be crazy money bet on #1 War Canoe (8/5) with Chad Brown and Irad, as well as #2 Wegetsdamunnys (7/2) and #4 Classy Lady (7/5), both coming from the hot barn of Christophe Clement – and why not? SmartCap has Wegetsdamunnys as best overall class, speed and near best last; Classy Lady has best last, third best overall class and speed, and War Canoe has best last and near best overall class and speed. However, since Saratoga is known as the graveyard of favorites, I am jumping ship, figures-wise, to Barclay Taggs’ entry of #6 Niko’s Dream (15/1). Scratched from the July 2nd $100K Mount Vernon Stakes and pointed to this one, he comes in with a 3:1-1-0 record here for $78.5K or $26.2K per race, the best of this group. His works have been solid and Tagg is 36% with last out winners. This horse is in fine tune and will be hauling ass in the stretch.

My pick: #6 Niko’s Dream (15/1)

Race 6, post time 3:37 pm — a $40K Claimer for 3yo+ NWx going 6.5F.

SmartCap results with Equibase numbers have #6 Thebigfundamental (6/1) with best overall speed, class and best last two cumulatively. Next is #5 American Power (3/1) with second best overall class and speed, best last and trainer Linda Rice, who is having a knock down meet, clipping at 27% winners and is third off the layoff. Finally, we have #2 Lone Rock (12/1) has co-best last and third best overall speed and class. With the exception of Jose Ortiz being back aboard the Linda Rice entry, there are two others that I will be leaning closer to. #1a Topper T (7/2) is first off the claim for the Mertkan Kantarmaci barn who is 23% off the claim. This son of Bellamy Road is 1-1 at Saratoga, earning $50.6K. His stablemate #1 Reed Kan is clicking on all cylinders winning two in a row of late and has a pressing style that will keep him near or on the lead. The other I am favoring is #3 Pete’s Play Call (5/2) Irad Jr. and Mike Maker team up where they are 27% and he exits a key race where, with the exception of one horse stumbling badly out of the gate, every horse (6) has improved. Additionally, this Munnings gelding is 2-2 at The Spa for $92.5K.

So, my plays will be the 1-5-3 combo in tri’s and exactas with #3 on top.
