Bet Garrity's Sunday Stakes! The Jersey Derby at Monmouth, Bernard Baruch at Saratoga, and Eddie Read & California Dreamin’ at Del Mar

Garrity's first post is at 4:32 pm EDT.

There’s a good lineup of racing across the country today, and we have plays in four stakes, all of them on grass, in New York, New Jersey, and California. We expect firm turf in all of them. Let’s go.

Monmouth Park, Race 9, 4:32 pm EDT

$100,000 Jersey Derby, 1 1/16 miles, Turf, 3-Year-Olds

Eight 3-year-olds line up to run a mile and a sixteenth on the grass at the Jersey Shore. The pick is 1-Irish Mias: he’s been running against tougher, in graded stakes in Florida and Kentucky, and should find the lesser company here much to his liking. Look for him to sit mid-pack and be rolling late. We will bet him to win at 5/2. The bet: Monmouth Park, Race 9, $35 to win on 1-Irish Miss.

Saratoga, Race 9, 5:46 pm EDT

Grade 2 Bernard Baruch Handicap, 1 1/16 miles, Turf, 3 & Up

A good field of six goes in the Baruch. 9/5 morning line favorite 2-Good Governance checks all of our handicapping boxes: he’s in good form, having won his last start; he’s got good cruising speed and a strong finishing kick; and he’s trained by Chad Brown, who seems to win every other race at Saratoga. It’s an obvious pick, but we think there is value in every winner, and we also think that Good Governance looks best here. We will bet him to win. The bet: Saratoga, Race 9, $40 to win on 2-Good Governance.

Del Mar, Race 8, 8:30 pm EDT

Grade 1 Eddie Read Stakes, 1 ⅛ miles, Turf, 3 & Up

The favorite among the seven runners in the Eddie Read is 7-United, and while his form his good -- he’s won graded stakes in his last two starts -- his edge in form is slight, and his odds will be miserly. He could win, but we are looking to take our wagering dollars elsewhere.

The pick is 1-Bowies Hero. He’s an amazingly consistent Phil D’Amato trainee who runs his race every time. Sometimes it’s good enough; sometimes it’s not. We think it will be good enough here and will bet him to win at 4-1. The bet: Del Mar, Race 8, $40 to win on 1-Bowies Hero.

Del Mar, Race 10, 9:30 pm EDT

$125,000 California Dreamin’ Stakes, 1 1/16 miles, Turf, California-breds 3 & Up

A deep field of eleven state-breds will go eight and a half furlongs in the California Dreamin’. We like 1-Camino Del Paraiso, a 7-year-old who starts for trainer O.J. Jauregui. He’s not exactly a win machine, with five wins from 37 lifetime starts, but he’s been running against open company, and here drops in against state-breds. He has the ability to stay close early, and finish strongly, and this will give him an edge over the closers, as the pace in this race looks to be modest. We will bet him to win at 5/2. The bet: Del Mar, Race 10, $35 to win on 1-Camino Del Paraiso.

That’s all for today. Until next time, enjoy the racing, be safe, and, as always, good luck at the windows.
