Has been on the bench since August of last year and his trainer, Jeff Bonde is impressive at brining horses back – to the tune of 29%. Since there isn’t much history on this guy (just four starts), I checked out his Daddy, More Than Ready, who took a four-month respite and returned to win the Louisiana Super Derby. A stretch? Maybe. #2 Kanderel (6/1) is near best overall speed and class, has best numbers two and three back, and has a sweet late kick. Trainer Mandella is 22% off 1-2 months, 50% in route to sprints, 38% in class down and 20% with jockey Jorge Velez. All his races have been at one mile, so the deduction of 2.5f may be not be in his wheelhouse. Recent brisk 5f works may signal his speed at this distance. #3 Rager (7/2) is a first gelding and had two recent starts at Oaklawn. Trainer Andrew Lerner is 21% in dirt to turf and 30% moving class down. He has next best last and near best speed and class. #5 Drop The Chalupa (4/1) is a second time starter with second Lasix. He posted a strong 89 Equibase number first out and judging from yesterdays’ GG and CT results, second time starters with this layoff is a hindrance.
My pick: I am going with #3 Rager. He has recent races, in shape, and suitable numbers to make this race.
