Thoroughbreds: McMudder picks Parx for the first hot, sunny Monday of the racing season

Post time is 12:54 pm EDT.

If Sunday was quiet, then today is downright silent. Parx is the only live venue in the area and many of the Parx connections will be at Timonium buying 2 year olds at the FasigTipton sale. More action would be possible by having over and under lines on auction horses but that is for someone else to take on. Mick wants to talk about the class and professionalism that Mark Casse and Gary Barber, War of Will’s connections, brought to the Preakness and their willingness to go on to the Belmont. Big horses on big days should be the play for any owner but especially those at the highest level. Kudos to the connections for putting the game first and rolling with the hot horse. Let’s all hope they are duly rewarded.

Picks for May 20, 2019:

Racing should get done before storms arrive, if they ever do arrive. Care should be taken to make sure you don’t bet an overheated horse. It will be warm today and the horses should be sweaty but too much is, well, too much.

Parx Race 1
Some days the racing office must really question what the Jockey Club is doing allowing names. This race is a fine example of such an issue. 6-Sheplaysthefield and 8-Thesweetesttaboo taken separately are each risqué but when they both end up in the same race, how will race caller Keith Jones deal with it? At least Mr. Jones will not play it up like other callers. This looks like a pretty straight forward trifecta with these two and 1-Brayden’s Start standing out above the rest. 8-Thesweetesttaboo appears to be the weakest on paper but trainer Claudio Gonzalez ships to win so this one is well intentioned here.
$10 W/P/S 8-Thesweetesttaboo
$2 Exacta Box 1,6,8
$1 Trifecta Box 1,6,8

Parx Race 6
This is a starter allowance race that looks more like a first level allowance race every time they run it at Parx . . . except today. Everyone in here looks to be a step below the first level allowance level in both speed and class but there is room for improvement. Last time, this race was run at 6f and several runners are back in this 5 ½ f version. Why does that matter? Because the winner, 5-Mary Costa, got scratched out, making the race wide open. Look for the recent claim, 2-Luxicharm, to work a trip from the rail, the exact issue she conquered last out.
$10 W/P/S 2-Luxicharm
$2 Exacta 2/3,4
$0.50 Trifecta 2/3,4/3,4
$0.10 Superfecta box 1,2,3,4

Mick’s Quickies

Parx Race 7 is a third level allowance affair with some real quality making it look like a stakes race or at least a prep. 5-Starship Reina and 8-No Picnic are scratches which opens the race wide. Look for the entry 1/1A to control the pace. 1A-Liz’s Cable Girl is the better of the two and comes in fresh.

Parx Race 8 is a Monday stakes race. How cool is that? 9-Avalina is a standout here and deserves to be the short-priced favorite. Look to upset with 5-Getting Warmer, a filly that looks to return to earlier form after spending the winter in Florida. Watch out for this PA-bred in future restricted races, too.
