TUESDAY’S SINGLE DIGITS

>>> The United States women’s team has won seven straight World Cup matches since the last time it faced Sweden in WC action (a 0-0 draw in 2015 Group Play), out-scoring their opponents by 27-2.

Japan notched both those goals in the 2015 Final after the USA had taken a 4-0 lead.

>>> When the Rockies and Padres set a four-game series record for runs scored (92) over the weekend, they broke a mark set by the Phillies and Brooklyn Dodgers (88) at Baker Bowl in 1929. That included a 50-run, 66-hit doubleheader to close out the series:

May 16: Phillies 7, Dodgers 4
May 17: Dodgers 14, Phillies 13
May 18 (1): Dodgers 20, Phillies 16
May 18 (2): Phillies 8, Dodgers 6

>>> Our Monday Quickie Quiz about the last MLB player to have six singles in a game bought a Twitter response from someone who thought Bob Dernier had done it as a Phillie against the Cubs.

It turns out that Dernier had no six-hit games but he did have three five-hit games (all singles) in his career:
> July 21, 1983 as a Phillie;
> May 24, 1984 as a Cub;
> May 30, 1984 at a Cub.

Each of those three was against the Atlanta Braves.

>>> From June 8 to June 17, 1979, the Phillies had a nine-game homestand and had a triple in every game, the longest Divisional Era (1969-) streak of a team hitting a three-bagger in MLB history.

All the usual late 1970s triplish names are on the list below, but the one that sticks out is Game 2’s Larry Christenson, who belted his second (and last) career triple off the Braves’ Mickey Mahler. His first triple had also been off the Atlanta Braves, in 1975 against Phil Niekro.

The 1979 Phillies’ nine-game triples streak:

June 8: Braves (L) – Bake McBride
June 9: Braves (W) – Larry Christenson
June 10: Braves (L) – Greg Gross
June 11: Astros (W) – Larry Bowa
June 12: Astros (W) – Larry Bowa
June 13: Astros (L) – Mike Schmidt
June 15: Reds (L) – Bake McBride 2
June 16: Reds (W) – Bake McBride, Garry Maddox
June 17: Reds (W) – Larry Bowa
