Baseball/Winter Playoff Double in South Philly

It is not every day that the Phillies play host to a New York baseball team on the same day that one of the city’s winter sports teams host a playoff opponent from the Big Apple area a few hundred feet away. But it has happened a lot more than you might think . . . Eight previous times, to be exact:

TUESDAY, APRIL 22, 1980

> Phillies overcame an 8-3 deficit to crush the Mets, 14-8, at Veterans Stadium. Mike Schmidt had six RBI, including a grand slam.
> Flyers topped the Rangers, 3-1, at the Spectrum to win their quarterfinal series, four games to one. Mel Bridgman had two assists.

FRIDAY, APRIL 20, 1984

> Phillies lose to Mets, 3-1, in 10 innings at Veterans Stadium.
> Sixers fall to Nets, 116-102, at the Spectrum to fall behind 0-2 in their best-of-five first-round series. Michael Ray Richardson had 32.

SUNDAY, APRIL 21, 1985

> Phillies erase a 5-2 deficit to rock the Mets, 10-6, at Veterans Stadium that afternoon. Glenn Wilson had a two-run homer and an RBI single.
> Flyers trounce the Islanders, 5-2, that evening at the Spectrum behind Brian Propp’s hat trick to take a 2-0 lead in their Conference Semifinal.

TUESDAY, APRIL 14, 1987

> Phillies drop a 7-5 decision to the Mets at Veterans Stadium. Mike Schmidt’s 498th career home run was not enough.
> Flyers top the Rangers, 3-1, at the Spectrum to take a 3-2 lead in their Patrick Division Semifinal. Rick Tocchet tallied a pair.

SUNDAY, MAY 21, 1995

> Phillies held off the Mets, 5-3, in a early afternoon game at Veterans Stadium. Charlie Hayes had a two-run single to cap a four-run first inning.
> Flyers opened their Eastern Conference Semifinal series with a 5-4 win over the Rangers at the Spectrum. John LeClair had a hat trick.

SUNDAY, MAY 25, 1997

> Phillies’ scheduled 1:35 game with the Mets at Veterans Stadium was rained out.
> Flyers topple the Rangers, 4-2, at the CoreStates Center (2 p.m. start) and win the Eastern Conference Final, four games to one. Rod Brind’Amour had a pair of goals in what would be the final playoff game of Wayne Gretzky’s career.

TUESDAY, MAY 8, 2012

> Phillies blow a 4-0 lead and lose to the Mets, 7-4, at Citizens Bank Park. Hunter Pence’s had a two-run homer in the first inning.
> Flyers are elinminated from the Eastern Conference Semifinal in a 3-1 Game 5 loss to the Devils at the Wells Fargo Center.

TUESDAY, APRIL 29, 2014

> Phillies and Cole Hamels get drubbed by the Mets, 6-1, at Citizens Bank Park in a game delayed at the start by a 88-minute rain delay.
> Flyers used a Wayne Simmonds hat trick to force a Game 7 with a 5-2 win over the Rangers at the Wells Fargo Center.

MONDAY, APRIL 15, 2019

> Phillies vs. Mets, 7:05 (Citizens Bank Park)
> Sixers vs. Nets, 8:05 (Wells Fargo Center)
