I'm going to have to start looking into existing data on this, but baseball -- at least April baseball this season -- seems like a good way to lose money.
Did anyone have Tampa Bay and Seattle leading their respective divisions? The Red Sox starting out on the road 3-8? The Yankees have more guy on the DL than in their lineup?
And it's not just the erratic team play that's made baseball betting so tough.
More than any other team sport, baseball is so dependent on the effectiveness of one player that it makes the games doubly tough to figure. Picking the Phillies-Marlins Over yesterday seemed like a logical move - the Phillies are pounding the ball and the Marlins are just trying to stay afloat. So, what happens? A pitcher's duel and a 3-1 Phillies win in extra innings.
In 18 innings, Yankee ace Masahiro Tanaka had walked two men and given up three earned runs. Yesterday, in four innings against the expected-to-be-lowly White Sox, he walked three and gave up five earned runs. In the Mets-Braves matchup between Cy Young winner Jacob deGrom and Julio Teheran, if you saw a 7-3 Braves victory, please drop us a line.
Then again, there are the times when the pitcher does what you'd expect and the team lets him down. Blue Jay Marcus Stroman is pitching to a 1.99 ERA and is 0-3.
Betting on baseball makes the games so much more exciting -- not necessarily enjoyable, but exciting -- but this season has been, so far, tough to figure.
Hey, if I wasn't going to win the million, I wanted my $15 back. Thanks, Tiger.
We had a good day Saturday and a so-so Sunday. Of course, Tiger Woods had a better weekend than all of us.
On Saturday, Jimmy Butler's one-man-team performance helped propel Boop's Philly Prop bets, Greg Frank won both NBA picks, Craig Dietel went 3-1 on NHL picks, and with no ties to ruin his day, Sean Miller went 11-2 on his soccer picks. Mark Eckel missed the winner at the Toyota Owners 400 but his field finished 2nd, 4th, 5th and 8th. With the ponies, RT won the exacta and trifecta at the Arkansas Derby, Chris Garrity won two races, one with a very nice payout, and at local tracks Mick McMudder had two winners AND three exactas.
On Sunday, RT had four winning tickets at Keeneland, and more impressive because half his horses were scratched, and Sean Miller went 8-4-2 in soccer.
We'll try to do better today.
Good luck at the tables, windows, kiosks and apps.
